GAAPMT at GMC

GAAPMT Posted on September 7, 2016 by NewtonMarch 13, 2021

October 21, 2016

The Georgia Mathematics Conference at Rock Eagle is fast approaching, and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage each of you to attend. The highlight of the conference for AP teachers is on Friday, October 21 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Gas Building. Keynote speakers will address topics in AP Calculus and AP Statistics, and there are several sessions for each discipline. These speakers all have extensive experience in the field and are there to bring you best practices and new ideas that will encourage and excite you about teaching AP. My motto as a teacher has always been, “If I think I know it all, I need to quit!” Through 30+ years of teaching, I have always been able to glean wonderful ideas from speakers at this conference dedicated to AP teachers and mathematics teachers. Meet Our Featured Presenter: Landy Godbold received his BS and MS degrees in Applied Mathematics from Georgia Tech and recently retired from teaching at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta after LX years. He taught some version of courses in statistics for over 35 of those years (at the AP level since 1996). In 1984, Landy was one of the first fifty participants in the Woodrow Wilson Summer Institutes in mathematics at Princeton (that year the topic was Statistics) and returned during the summers of 1988-1993 as Computer Director for that program. He served two, three-year terms as an NCTM appointee to the ASANCTM Joint Committee on Curriculum in Statistics and Probability, and served the final two years as chair. Landy became an AP reader of Statistics exams in 1997, and he has six years of experience as a table leader. Landy co-authored (with Linda Young, Gail Burrill, and Christine Franklin) NCTM’s Navigations in Data Analysis. His honors include Westminster’s Alex P. Gaines professorship, Alumni Fellow for Distinguished Teaching, and the national Presidential, Radio Shack, and MAA Edyth May Sliffe awards. Apart from statistics, he enjoys family (almost-two-yearold and one-week old grandsons), music, cycling, table tennis, and good red wine.
